New Years Resolutions: How to Keep Pain From Hindering Your Exercise Goals

2014 is rapidly approaching, and that means the vast majority of us will be setting New Years Resolutions:  chief among them being to lose weight or get fit.  One of the first things people do when they decide to tackle this resolution is they start getting active: whether that be in the form of walking, jogging, or running.  Cardio is hugely important for overall health, as is general activity.  In fact, experts recommend at least 30 minutes of cardio exercise 5 days per week for optimal overall health.  And yet, each year people set these goals for activity, but fail to achieve them… why?

For many people, activity ends up being painful in more ways than one.  Often times, when someone hasn’t been active for a while, their body has a hard time adjusting to the activity they’re forcing on it.  And, for a large group of people, activity can specifically be hindered by foot & ankle pain.  For people with plantar fasciitis, foot pain, pain in the ankles, knees, hips or diabetic neuropathy regular exercise like walking might become painful rapidly.  What are these people to do?   Most have tried over the counter solutions, custom orthotics, shoe inserts and those gel type products without getting any relief.

At my Troy podiatrist practice, we recommend that anyone who wants to get fit in the New Year should stop into the general practitioner first to evaluate their overall health, and they should specifically stop into their podiatrists office before beginning strenuous activity that requires them to be on their feet.  Why?  For some of the reasons below:

  1. Get fitted for an athletic shoe.  Have you ever heard that your tires are the most important part of your car, because they’re what stands between it and the road?  The same can be said of shoes.  Your shoes and the fitting of them are crucial in your overall exercise.  Shoes that aren’t properly fitted can pinch your skin, damage nerves, and leave you with severe foot pain due to a lack of or improper support.  Stop in to see a podiatrist to make sure you get the best fit on your new athletic shoes.
  2. Orthotics help make sure that your feet are aligned properly, even if they’re already misaligned.  Custom orthotics like those we recommend at our office are able to push your feet back into the proper alignment, preventing or mitigating foot, knee, hip and back pain.  Your foot is the foundation of the musculoskeletal system:  orthotics make sure your foundation is solid.
  3.
